Ugh, yeah, distance-apartment-hunting is awful. There were landlords in Pittsburgh who wouldn't deal with me at all unless I could show up for an in-person viewing.
What you could also do to save on cash is to make a whole slew of viewing appointments for a week or two and stay at a hostel for that period.
bork: Thank you. If anyone has a large (400+ sq. ft.) studio or 1BD open, lease starting Dec. 15 or Jan. 1, preferably in Buckman, Hosford-Abernethy, Goose Hollow, Sunnyside (Hawthorne), anywhere in NW, or possibly St. Johns or Hollywood, ideally on the top floor, for <$850 (preferably <$700), that would be amazing. W/D on-site would be great, and in-unit would make me sing...
battlepunk: Long-distance apartment hunting is hell. A lot of the ads I've seen require an in-person viewing.

If you haven't already, try craigslist. You might also try expanding to the Beaverton area (lots of apts by the max station) as it is an easy commute to downtown. The max train simplifies things by a large margin.
Craigslist is going to be your best bet. As someone who has done EXACTLY the same thing.... Most landlords will not rent without showing the place first, unless you go for one of those big apt complexes and even then... BTDT and it didn't end well. Did it in january - february.
My suggestion, based solely on my experience, would be to get a storage unit down here (or do one of those pod thingies) and find a temporary situation while you look in earnest. There are a lot of places around here in your price range but they are really hard to get if you are searching long distance.

I have plenty of friends who live in the PDX area, I could put the word out that you're looking for a place if you want.

The description above is what I'm looking for in a rental, though, not a sublet. For a sublet, I'm much more flexible, and ideally it's furnished.
Again, thanks.
