My instinct was to hit the "Like" button. And then I realized this wasn't facebook. It's ... unnerving to realize how much a website has influenced my thought process. ;)
For all the problems that my city[1], state, and country have, there are still many things which are better than they were last year (or even last week), and that will be be better next year (or even next week).
I walk down my street, in the "other" Cambridge of people who aren't professors or policemen, headed toward Harvard and Prof. Gates's house. I pass the corner convenience store with a sign in the window-in English and Amharic-that says "We have injera". I pass the Haitian barbershop and the Korean restaurant and the Tibetan rug store with posters in the windows that say "Free the Panchen Lama". I hear Spanish and Kreyol and languages I can't even identify...and I smile, and see smiles in return.
I remember the long line when I went to vote last November, and the number of people there, and the number of colors and languages and faces and ages represented.
That is my day. That is my hope.
[1] Cambridge, MA. Perhaps you've heard of it lately?
