A personal plea to vote NO on Prop 8

Oct 25, 2008 13:06

I just sent my family and friends a long email asking for them to vote no on Prop 8. While I know that I'm just preaching to the choir with my friends, I'm definitely speaking to the unconverted with most of my family ( Read more... )

The choir is listening (and singing of course). What are the chances of Prop 8 passing in California? We haven't had any serious challenges here in Massachusetts -- not yet anyway -- the legislature actually was able to keep a proposed amendment question off the ballot this year.

The most recent polls I've heard have Prop 8 being very narrowly defeated, with the spread being within the margin of error. Which is not at all comforting. The yes on 8 crowd has been bankrolled largely by out-of-state interests (the Mormon Church has been beating the drum to the tune of several millions of dollars, the vast majority coming in from Utah and points elsewhere), and due to that, eroded early leads by the No on 8 campaign.

The funding for No on 8 seems to have strengthened a lot in the last week or so, though, and I've seen reports that it's now surpassed the opposition. That's very good news.

Why the hell it takes only 50.1% of the vote to amend California's constitution is what I want to know. That's just a damnfool situation.

But I do have hopes that Prop 8 will not pass, and if it does, that it will be struck down by the federal courts as unconstitutional. Eventually.

Dearest, if I could I would vote to do what is only *right* and *decent* for all of my friends and loved ones--of ALL persuasions and political, religious, and sexual affiliations--to ensure that they have the same rights as everyone. I'm ashamed that my home state of CA is in danger of turning back the clock; I was always proud that it was a progressive, forward-looking place (and, to be honest, that it "scared" the narrow-minded in these fly-over states... they could use a little shaking up around here). I have very good friends in CA, and you can rest assured that they're on your side!

Thank you, darling. Your support is especially wonderful to hear right now, as I've just received an email back from my brother and his wife.

Clearly, they were hitting the Hello Kitty crack pipe, because they replied with all sorts of crazy talk about lesbians who deceive to conceive and kids being taught how gay people "make love" and whatnot.

Um. Yeah.

So thanks.

I think everyone is holding their breath for November. Here's hoping people get it right.

Yes, I think so, too.

Here's hoping people get it right.

Amen, brother man.

Also donated twice. I've taken to donating in honor of homophobes I encounter on discussion boards. And then telling them about it. :)

Prop 8 is the only vote in recent memory on which I simply cannot see both sides. I can come up with reasons to support Prop 4, or reasons to vote for McCain. They aren't as good as my reasons-- which is why I'm voting the way I am-- but I can understand the mentality. But I've drawn a complete blank on reasons for voting for Prop 8.

Then again, I'm assuming that people base their votes on reason...

Yeah, they're not so much on board with reason as loudly throttling it.

I am so very vexed about this.
