Tattooed Student

Koreans almost never have tattoos.  So I was surprised when spring rolled in and students started wearing short sleeve shirts.  I noticed one student with a tattooed peaking out from each sleeve.  I asked him to show it to me and he revealed this burley tattoo:

Well, to me, they don't look like gang tattoos, but then, they may well have some sort of symbolic meaning in them, or some gangsign hidden in them.
I'm just thinking about the UK where gang tattoos often have a particular thing in them.
But dragon-karp-oni-lotus are all pretty common tattoos in my mind, though I have no idea about how Korean tattoos function.

Asian gangsters do like buddhist-flavored tats, especially the guardian demons. They also prefer the ever-popular tiger and dragon, and yes, koi. This kid might just be a very devout buddhist? His parents' okay seems the strangest thing to me.
