The first one is "The heart is jealous of the front" (as in, the military front)

- Why, Suzon, that great sorrow ? Is that because your husband was sad to leave you ?
- Eh, no ! Quite the opposite ; it's because the monster didn't look sad enough to go back to the front.

(I'm not sure of my English here... going back to the front should have made him more sad)

The second one is called "Crying Jeanne & Smiling Jeanne"

It's a reference to the Comtesse de Ségur novel "Jean qui grogne et Jean qui rit" (it's the exact cover of the edition I read as a kid ;p)
Comtesse de Ségur's novel were very old-fashioned (if not reactionary), very moral and at the same time kind of perverse ;)
