vid commentary: "Come On"

Feb 01, 2004 15:49

redredshoes and pipsqueaky both asked for commentary on "Come On"; pips wanted to hear specifically about the process of coming up with the narrative structure. Also, sisabet asked about motion.

Warning: this got long.

Actually, I think I managed to get away with that on the strength of the juxtaposition with Buffy kissing Riley. I mean, it's Faith and Buffy, so the subtext here has pretty much already become text, but I'm not too proud to drop anvils when the opportunity presents itself.

I have personally witnessed the effectiveness of this particular anvil when I showed the vid to a friend who a) is clueless about fandom, b) had never seen vids before, and c) had only seen a handful of BtVS episodes. That was her moment of clarity, when she was sure that she was supposed to be sensing what she was sensing about the subtext.

That's right -- I'd forgotten about that. Proving that one woman's anvil is another woman's necessary method for bringing femslash to the uninitiated. Go me!

Go you, indeed. Also? It doesn't just illustrate the (sub)text, it also suggests the betrayal Faith feels. That's more than an anvil, my friend. It's a paperweight, a building block, a breakfast cereal!

Promise me that you'll leave the house sometime this week.

I'm really enjoying these commentaries. "Come On" remains one of my all-time favorite vids. :)

I'm almost embarrassed to say that my current (and first) complete-an-actual-vid attempt is also a Faith/Buffy focus. I'm not bringing this up to seek out encouragement or anything, I just wanted to congratulate you on setting what I see as the standard for anything featuring them. I'm going to make myself finish my own vid, but I can't imagine anything replacing the emotional images that "Come On" and "Superstar" have left with me.

I'm glad you're enjoying the commentaries. I'm glad you're *reading* them! I finish them and I see how long they are and I think, good god, surely anyone who'd want to read this is just gonna go watch the vid again instead. *g*

And hey, cool that you're working on a Faith/Buffy vid! It really is a difficult pairing -- there's just not that much source. I remember watching Laura's "Tell Me" right after I finished "Come On" and being really embarrassed at how many of the same shots I'd used... But that's just how it is. We have to try to make the same source *feel* different.

And thank you for the kind words about "Come On" and "Superstar." I'm still very happy with them, so it's wonderful to hear that other folks like them too.

Both, actually. I don't know about everyone else, but I always end up pulling up the vid and running it alongside the commentary. I keep thinking, "Oh, this one I'll just read, and then I'll go look at the vid..." but I always break down after the first paragraph or so. :) And I have this nagging feeling that I'm not the only one that's silently enjoying them, so let me assure you, they're worth every second you put into them.

Well, I suppose the commentaries make the most sense alongside the vids, which is after all how DVD commentaries work. And I write them while I watch the vids (with lots of pausing, of course!).

And I do so very much appreciate your letting me know you like them. I don't mind people enjoying silently, but enjoying vocally is even better. *g*

Hi! Relatively new fan of Buffy, finished the show for the first time last June. I was talking with a friend because I said I was making a Buffy/Faith vid and she wondered if I had seen many vids. I said no, so she linked me to your Faith vids. This was really good! I love the edit between the first hits around 1:25. Superb! And I'm a huge fan of that fist back and forth from "Graduation Day" that follows (it's in my vid, which is a bit more "angry" if you will than this one). That whole back and forth was really brilliant.

Thanks so much for your comments! And good luck with your own vid; Buffy and Faith are really fun to vid -- I have a couple of new vid ideas for them that I'm hoping to get to in the coming year.
