While watching it, I thought this ep was great: creepsome, funny, flirty (Faith! Faith!), heartbreaking... and all with continuity! Hey, I'm watching BtVS! See Vonnie's review, whose enthusiasm covers pretty much everything I had to say on that front ( Read more... )

His role at this point of the arc reminds me of that of Joel Grey's Doc in S5 somewhat, only on a larger scale--as a tool of the main villain, who then turns around and manages to make himself a lot more threatening than the actual Big Bad itself.

In terms of role, yeah, this makes sense to me; I'm with you that the creepiness of the FE has waned of late, and Caleb added a much-needed jolt. Note to Joss & co.: human villain = much scarier than prosthetic-y pre-speech super-vamp.

...how to put a different spin on it so that it doesn't feel like a retread of early seasons.I actually have no worries about this. Seasons 3, 4, and 5 were all pretty explicitly about the ways in which communities are more effective than just individual effort, but they handled that theme in very different ways. Season 6 was less about community and more about pairs of people connecting, but still thematically related -- and, again, different. So at this point I have faith that they can pull it off ( ... )
