time, energy, focus, happiness

Yesterday evening a local friend sent me a link to this article about time vs. bandwidth, and this evening we talked about it over dinner -- about needing to think not just about managing our time but managing our intellectual or emotional focus, being mindful about what can and can't be multitasked ( Read more... )

This post resonates with me VERY STRONGLY. Especially that difference between the easy fun thing and the energy-requiring-but-ultimately-more-fulfilling fun thing. Good thoughts to mull over.

I've been thinking about it a lot for the last couple of days and talking it over with local friends. One of them pointed out that the bandwidth thing is in many ways a gendered issue because in so many mixed-sex couples with kids the woman is the primary parent -- as in, even if she's not the one dealing with the kids at a given moment she's the one who's constantly mentally running through the Oh God Now What kid-related checklist -- and kids take up a LOT of bandwidth.

I'm too tired to do the things that make me truly happy, so I give myself a break and do something merely fun

I totally agree - figuring this one out is one of the hallmarks of becoming an adult. The stuff that truely satisfies and fulfills you on a more lastling basis tends to take more effort and focus, it's like a well-balanced, healthy but yummy meal that keeps you going for hours vs a sugary, starchy snack that is maybe even more yummy, but you're back at the fridge in 5 minutes. There is a role for both, but having an awareness of the difference, and how it affects our well-being, is essential, because - at least for me - that's what helps me go the extra mile and to the things that take more effort and committment.

Yeah, I've been using the food analogy too. There's nothing wrong with a delicious sugary snack now and again, but a whole pound of candy isn't good for you, doesn't feel good afterwards, and isn't nourishing.

The bandwidth metaphor gave me a whole new way to think about some issues that I've been struggling with for ages now, seriously. Glad the post was useful for you!

I have found the bandwidth metaphor so useful, seriously. Though also a little depressing. DO NOT WANT TO ADULT.
