mixmaking: questions answered

Jul 17, 2008 16:24

In the wake of my recent mix posts ( here and here), 12_12_12 asked some questions about the process, which I'm answering in a separate post because my answers were getting a bit long for a comment.

This post is sort of a follow-up to a long ramble about mixes that I posted... good heavens, four and a half years ago.

How instinctive (or not) is your process for actually choosing the songs? )

Wow, this is awesome! Very, very interesting and perfect timing because I was wondering about the thought process of the order of your More Joy mix (LOVE it, btw). I love how it's a creative process and you have to keep track of all the various elements you're working with from rhythm to melody to thematics. That reminds me of vidding. Thanks for all the examples. I would be very interested to hear any more of your thoughts on mixes or just music in general.

Oh, that is interesting! I don't do themed mixes deliberately (mine are just labeled "Happy Mix #whatever") but mine end up having themed sections ("the pop-punk-oldie-remix section," "the cheering up songs section") just because of how the music ends up feeling. And I tend to go from super obnoxiously bouncy in the beginning to slightly more calm but still bouncy toward the end, though part of that is because I'm making mixes to drive to.
