old BtVS vids: DivX + imeem

Feb 12, 2007 15:08

DivX versions of all my Buffy vids (including Writing Notes and Glorious #1) are now posted over at the paper cup vids page. I haven't decided yet whether or when I'm going to remaster any of these older vids, so at the moment they've got exactly the same virtues, flaws, and less-than-DVD-quality source that they've had for years now, but I figured ( Read more... )

with any new vid, I scan and look for an iMeem streaming version - this means I may actually peek at the vid (Youtube I will skip unless I know the vidder). From there, if I like the vid I will download the full version - that works out to be 10-20% of the vids I watch (I am guessing on these numbers so please do not quote me). Vids that I have to download are often bookmarked for later - and to be honest I haven't had time to go back and watch them.

Good to know. My own tendency is to download everything that looks interesting, because I won't remember to come back to it; if I don't like it when I get around to watching it, I just delete it. But I maintain this system because I put limits on my daily online time; I don't click through to streaming vids because I start clicking through to other stuff and then half the morning's gone, so I tend to save up downloads -- for weeks or even months -- and then spend a weekend watching TONS of stuff.

Glorious #1 was the first vid of yours that I ever saw, and it still makes me chair dance. :)

I use iMeem when I see a new vid announcement on LJ. I go and preview the vid there, and then if I like it enough to rewatch/keep it, I'll go back to the person's LJ to download it and to leave feedback.

It's pretty handy, actually.

I haven't been following iMeem in any other way, though; its tools don't seem robust enough to support the community, which is so firmly entrenched here, and it keeps not sending me the weekly update emails I asked it for. ::shrug::

Yeah, I'm not getting the update emails either. I do see "what's new" notifications when I log in to the windows client, but I'm fairly sure I'll only be doing that when I upload, which won't be happening often once this initial flurry of uploading old stuff is over.

I don't know how many vidders / avid vid-fans are using it, but I think that it is popular with more casual vid-watchers. I will say that I was surprised to see that people (esp. SGA people, SGA seems really into del.ici.ous) are using del.ici.ous re: imeem (it made more sense once I realized the option was right on the streaming page to submit it to del.ici.ous ( ... )

Good heavens, you're thorough. *g*

The point about hard drive space is a good one, especially now that DivX is becoming the default file type; I gave myself TONS of hard drive space when I built my no-longer-all-that-new computer, but obviously lots of people don't have that option, which would make streaming video (and especially playlists) much more appealing.

I sometimes use Imeem to "preview" vids to see if I should download them, but with my increasingly crappy net connection I find that I'm using it less and less. It actually takes less time to download than it takes for the streaming video to cache. *headdesk*

Yeah, the previewing thing seems to be a popular approach. I suppose I can imagine doing that for vids in an unfamiliar fandom or vids I don't want to commit to downloading, I just... haven't. Heh. I'm with you -- downloading is often faster.
