TV I've been watching and not watching

Jan 16, 2007 23:34

I've been meaning to post meaningfully about TV for months; instead I've been jotting down occasional notes. At this point I've accumulated enough notes that a) I will never get around to turning them into meaningful posts, and b) they're sort of a large post all by themselves. So here we go ( Read more... )

tv: firefly/serenity, tv: doctor who, tv: bsg, tv: wire, tv: btvs, tv: veronica mars, tv: farscape, tv: gilmore girls, tv: slings & arrows

Hey, you! *tacklehugs* And posting about TV to boot. Yay!

Wow, I had no idea you were checking out all these new shows. Well, renenet is the enabler extraordinaire, so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised.

Apparently Torchwood gets wee bit better near the end of the season, but my loathing for the characters was such that by the time I quit watching, I had no interest in re-engaging in the universe, and this is despite my finding Jack quite attractive (except John Barrowman is a terrible actor. Sigh.) I think my reaction to it is rather out of the norm though. Plenty of smart people I know seem to like it.

I enjoy Supernatural on a superficial level, but like you, the lack of women keeps me from engaging with it more deeply. It's fun albeit a bit puzzling to me to see other people flailing so much about it, but it would be terribly boring if everyone liked the same thing, so.

I think you'll like Heroes. *g*

I know! New shows! WTF?

I suspect I will like Heroes too; laurashapiro already has plans to show me eps over spring break. *g*

And yeah, I'm enjoying watching other people flail about Supernatural, especially when they are content to let me treat it as a spectator sport. *g*

Well, for what it's worth, it is possible to watch SPN casually. ;D Or, at least I found out that's what I was doing when everyone else around me started exploding way more than I knew I ever could about it. ;} Though, if I didn't find the two leads attractive...yeah, well, hard to say if I'd keep it.

But Heroes--yes. Definitely try that. Not perfect but I think very engaging. And I'm sure you'd have no trouble getting hooked up with the episodes. It unfolds slowly I suppose, but it's the kind of thing I'm having fun savoring, so the pacing feels perfect.

Also--have you tried The Office? I shied away from it pretty hard at first (I saw one episode and thought, "Who the heck would want to see this every week? It's so *weird*.") but now I'm hopelessly hooked. It has just barely nudged past my excitement for new BSG every week. A half-hour sitcom! The hell? :D

OMG! I didn't know you were watching The Office! Eeeee!

Isn't it the oddest thing? It's such an atypical show to be fannish about, sort of uncomfortable and sad and yeah, it's a freakin' half-hour sitcom, but I love the characters so much, I feel like bursting into pieces over how awesome it is, week after week.

Hee! I haven't posted since I got sucked in! :D

YES to all of this. I have never in my life watched a show where I *had* to say out loud many times an episode "Oh, [all the characters]." because they are so--::guestures emphatically::!

And I have yet to collect icons, so that makes me sad when I comment about the show. ;D

The Office is one that even Vonnie's pimping has thus far not sold me on trying, largely because it's a workplace show. It's possible that I'll check it out at some point, but my Netflix queue already has more stuff than I'll watch in the next YEAR, and that's BEFORE we get to the anime I added recently.

Heh -- your reaction to Supernatural reminds me of my reaction to Angel. Not exactly, because I like Angel, but the stream of female victims of the week has been known to leave me tearing at my hair, chanting, "I miss Buffy!" while my family/roommate/friends look on in polite bemusement.

Yeah. I mean, I miss Buffy ALL THE TIME, pretty much, but watching Supernatural sent me from "general missage" to "painful ache." Oh, my beloved show.

Now I want to hear the SPN vid song!

I am kind of tickled that you actually tried to watch.

I did try! You will appreciate the conversation I had with Lum when she heard:

heresluck: did I tell you guys that I had a Supernatural vidsong a couple of months ago?
sockkpuppett: NO!
sockkpuppett: what?
heresluck: oh, I had the idea without having seen the show, purely on the vicarious "OMG SPN!" of it all.
heresluck: so I netflixed a couple of discs and watched.
sockkpuppett: I just figured out that it wasn't your cup o' meat, you know?
heresluck: it's not. *g*
sockkpuppett: no ensemble.
sockkpuppett: no regular leads for women.
sockkpuppett: how'm I doin?
heresluck: It's like you know me!

I will not point out that your initial reactions to Supernatural remind me of sockkpuppett's initial reactions. Nope. Not saying a word....

But the mere fact that you've been checking it out has made my day.

BSG is one of those shows I like, but to really enjoy I need to watch it in chunks. 3-4 eps at a go.

I agree with you about Doctor Who being oh so charming. The latest Christmas ep reminded me of that in droves. Torchwood is...not Doctor Who. LOL That's not to say I haven't enjoyed the season, because I have in a very I can watch this without thinking all that much sort of way, but even watching it with most of the critical nitpicking turned off, I couldn't help but feel that it was a very uneven season. The few eps that were strong, soared and made me giddy. But there just weren't that many of them. I'm interested in how things evolve next season.

And if you haven't seen Dexter, go watch it. It was so unbelievably good.

And I will not point out that Lum finds Dean hot. Nope. Not saying a word. *g*

Dexter is another show that I fully believe is terrific, but that I have absolutely no desire to watch. At this point, there just aren't enough hours in the day for me to *make* myself watch TV that doesn't appeal to me; I'd rather be vidding, you know?

I wasn't looking to watch Dexter either, but once I started, I was hooked. I think the show I feel that way about right now is Heroes. I've watched a few eps, I keep expecting to like it...but yet, it does nothing for me. And, so that frees up a night for other endeavors.

And yes, I would rather see you vidding than watching stuff on TV you're not excited about.
