famers' market: like coming home

Jun 10, 2006 11:32

Two weeks ago this morning, while at WisCon, I visited my beloved farmers' market for the first time in nearly a year. I didn't have a chance to write it up at the time.

I wanted to go at my usual time (7am), and told oyceter and oracne that they were welcome to come with me but they'd need to be in the hotel lobby at 6:55 to meet me. They were both there, and ( Read more... )

Not as much as I've missed going to my market, I assure you!

But what a lovely thing to say; thank you.

Thank you for that last paragraph. I feel precisely the same way.

And I'm looking forward to the CSA box posts -- I've never been brave enough to do that, because you're stuck with whatever they give you rather than being able to pick and choose, but I imagine you're going to come up with a lot of creative cookery as a result. (:

The lack of choice with CSA boxes is exactly why I haven't done CSA before; why should I, when I could go to market and get whatever quantities I wanted? But now... it's just so much better than any of my other options.

When House of Geeks bought meat directly from farms a couple of years ago (two lambs, a pig, and a quarter of a cow!), we were in much the same position -- not enough of certain things, plus cuts of meat we'd never tried before. And we *did* have to be creative, and that was fun, even if not all the experiments were entirely successful. *g*

Whole lambs! A whole pig! I'd have no idea what to do, but it'd be fun to try. I think in those circumstances I might try to learn to make sausage.

I inherited a chest freezer with The New House, so I'm going to be trying to buy meat directly again; it can be a little challenging, but hunting down recipes is fun. And the cost per pound is unbeatable.

Awwwwwwwwesommmmmmmmmmmme!

I totally started salivating while reading that post.

I miss the FM, too! I'll have to look into Iowan CSAs once I get settled!

And you know if you want me to come out there and help you eat your weekly supply of veg, well, I'm a very good helper.

Aww, thank you for the generous offer of help. *g* I'd invite you up, but I'm no fun right now -- I'm all house projects all the time. I should post the "before" pictures; "after" pictures will starting becoming possible early next week, with luck...

Mmmmmmmmm. :-)

I'm so glad you were able to work out a CSA arrangement. We just picked up our first bag of CSA food this week -- today I had a salad for lunch of tiny lettuces and spicy arugula and turnip greens and sliced sweet baby turnip, and it tasted so good and so real it made me want to cry. In the good way.

Someday I would love to have you over for food. If only someone had perfected that teleporter...

Oh, I would *love* to come over to your house for food, and then have you over in return! I was working on the dining room of the new house today, and thinking about the dinner parties I'll be able to have at my lovely new dining room table...

(And I'm thinking of importing food to VividCon this year; shall I bring provisions for you as well? *g*)
