that fandom character meme: responses

I have vid notions for all of these shows except Veronica Mars, which made thinking through these questions especially interesting.

In the order they were requested:

X-Files )

tv: x-files, tv: veronica mars, tv: farscape, tv: firefly/serenity, tv: gilmore girls, tv: bsg, fandom

Is there a character whom everyone hates? See, I think the closest we're gonna get is Logan, again, and then I'll be inclined to defend him just because he's interesting.

Oh, no. I think the closest we're gonna get is Duncan. Most people seem to like Logan.

But I can't take these "everyones" seriously anymore, since for any fandom I know reasonably well I can think of someone on any side of any issue and/or character preference.

I agree with Mely that more people dislike Duncan than Logan, but for me the character that *everybody* hates is Jackie.

Jackie! I'd managed to forget about her completely. She's been MIA yet in the credits for how many eps now?

Many. She's been gone the whole time Wallace has been gone.

8. The character I'd slap: Veronica's mom. And probably Logan.

ACK! *steps in front of Logan*
I think the people on the show hit him enough, so I will take the beating in his sted.

This is actually one of the few shows I can think of where the femslash options seem way more plausible to me than the boyslash

Ditto. I can slash almost any of the girls together (well, Zoe is kinda tricky), but the guys ... yeah, I'm just not seeing it.

Stark. Though I know sdwolfpup is with me on this one.

Me! Me! I'm with you too!

And I completely agree about Starbuck/Apollo.

You even have a Stark icon! You totally win.

And yeah, Zoe is the Firefly character most resistant to femslash. Which is just awesome, because she's really the most conventionally butch of the four of them. Trust Joss to spin traditional gender/sexuality dynamics around like that. ::sigh:: My show!

the fact that Joss was so clearly using everything he'd learned about managing large groups of characters over the course of BtVS and AtS

Yes. Firefly has always given me the feeling that Joss was using what he'd learned, that if you watch the first season of each show, you can so clearly see the huge steps forward that he made in his ability to immediately grasp the dynamic. And I think the cast's unusual closeness helped that, too. Lightning in a bottle.

I'm curious to see you wanted to be like Zhaan and not Aeryn. If you have time, why did you pick her? (From what I've seen, when choosing a female character for that question, people picked Aeryn, so it's always neat to see different choices.)

The wonderful and terrifying thing about fandom is that somewhere, someone has written a fic for every pairing. It just...I choose not to know about John/Grazya fic.

I think it would be really interesting to watch them have a short, messy, ultimately disastrous affair and then have to deal with the fallout. Now that is a really ( ... )

Well, I love Aeryn, but the thing is, Aeryn's best qualities are characteristics I actually already have to some extent. Whereas Zhaan's patience, her gentleness, her ability to wait as well as to take action, her capacity for being calm and understanding with people who are really pissing her off... those are qualities I often need but mostly lack.

I really am curious where the Starbuck/Apollo thing is going to go. I think the two of them are fascinating together, but I just don't think it would work for them to get it on with the Pure Twu Wub right now. So yeah, like you said in your response, maybe sometime way down the line -- or maybe we could get to see it, hey, not working. Thus far the show's been damn good at avoiding schmoopy coupledom, especially for the leads, so I'm happy to trust the writers and see what happens. (This Friday OMG!)
