So I've been obsessing about The New Computer (or rather the possibility of The New Computer) for over a year now. The New Computer has been a pipe dream of mine since about six weeks after I started vidding (nearly four years ago), but it's only in the last year that I've gotten serious about planning, largely because up until that point saving

I picked up a Build Your Own Computer!!! issue of some computer geek magazine last spring, which helped me put together a checklist ("note to self: do not forget CPU"), start figuring out compatible parts, etc. (Crucial's memory guide is great, too -- the RAM compatibility was the thing I was having most trouble with.) And yeah, I imagine I'll have to do some sort of zen meditation to prepare for actually dropping the chipset onto the motherboard, but hey, I just started taking yoga, so clearly the time is right...

Yay for good deals, and man oh man, picking out computer parts is way more exciting than it should be. So easy to lose an evening planning the next one. ;D

First off, you rock for having the guts to ASSEMBLE YOUR OWN COMPUTER. I think that is very hard core. You were truly a geek before, and now you are like unto at *least* a minor geek deity.
And secondly, I cannot wait to see more of your vids. The LOTR one. And the Serenity one. And all the others, too. Can we safely assume that VividCon will not have to languish without a vid from you, this coming year?

You know, a few years ago assembling my own computer would have seemed impossible. But now... I've upgraded my current machine so many times that practically the only thing I haven't done is replace the motherboard and chipset. I've pretty much (re)built this system; I just didn't do it all at once. Doing it in a case that was actually *designed* for this is going to be so easy by comparison.
And yeah, if I have my way there'll be at least one new vid from me at VVC. Whee!

Except that whenever I hear "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak, I want to vid B/A *SO BADLY*. It's even all story-boarded in my head!
Anywho:
1) I love your icon. It is so very shiny.
2) Your advisor who teaches 215 and I are becoming fast friends. It's sort of weird, but also kind of fun. In fact, I saw him (and his wife) outside my apartment one day not so long ago, walking their dogs. Talk about a parallel universe - he was *scruffy*!!! Close Encounters, oh yes.
3) I miss you! I wish I could hang out with you in the Rathskeller and drink beer while you drink Sprecher's or eat icecream. That would be nice.
4) You may have had practice in mucking about with computer-innards, but I think putting together your own comp qualifies you for "genius mechanic" status yourself. 5) I hope work is going well ( ... )

2) That is a parallel universe I do not want to visit. However, it is vaguely reassuring to know that my former advisor's dyke fetish continues unabated.
3) Right back atcha. I may be in town for Thanksgiving; are you and L going to be around, or are you putting in family time?
4) Don't I wish. Although I did successfully install a new digital thermostat a few weeks ago, which required getting special tools, which meant getting a bigger toolbox. When I finally buy a house, I have a feeling my butch points are going to go through the freakin' roof.
5) It is! Mostly. When I'm not procrastinating like the lazy bitch I basically am.
And I hope you're keeping it together yourself. I don't envy you your Old Norse. *g*
