In what may be my single worst-timed instance of fannish enthusiasm ever, I have in the past week become utterly smitten with Gilmore Girls. I started watching the show from the beginning (with
renenet's help) a while ago, and got through the first half of S1 watching occasionally but not regularly, let alone obsessively: enjoying the show but assuming

I caught most of the early seasons (1-3, I think) completely out of order, so I'm not going to say much, for fear of accidentally spoiling you. But I watch it, and there's a decent LJ contingent, and I will happily read whatever you have to say about it.
The show also hits my single biggest relationship bulletproof kink, which is the trust-and-reliance, friends-to-lovers thing that Lorelai and Luke have going on.
Oh, god, me too. And on the Cruisie book. I particularly love the episode where Lorelai's father ends up in the hospital, and Luke drops everything to take her to see him. I just...yeah. Luke.

Seriously, I haven't been this 'shippy about a pair of characters since the early days of Farscape. I had forgotten how much fun it is to be watching TV and find oneself yelling "omigod you two are totally into each other, stop being distracted by your deep personal drama and crazy emotional baggage and just GET IT ON already!" And then actually being kind of happy when they don't because it allows for more yelling in the next ep.
And WORD about the eps where Luke drops everything to help Lorelai. The hospital one. The escaped baby chick one. Others I'm forgetting right now. Bullet. proof. kink.

Curiously, GG is partly responsible for introducing me to BtVS. I used to channel surf during commercial breaks and UPN was just one channel over from the WB, and Buffy was in the same time slot. Which caused much angst when I was busy on Tuesday nights (and with only one VCR).
I wouldn't say I'm obsessive about the show, and frankly, it's kinda nice to have one show that I can watch casually and not have to analyze absolutely everything.
As for Jess/Rory, it wasn't so much that I found Jess interesting, I simply wanted to get Rory away from Dean (whom I didn't like from the very beginning).

I imagine there are plenty of people who don't like Dean. I love him, actually -- he reminds me of several of my high school friends -- but the show has always been very clear, even when we're supposed to be rooting for Rory and Dean, that in some ways they are not a great match. They're cute, but they're not built to last. Which is to be expected, since Rory's, what, 16?

The show doesn't elicit quite the freakish fannish obsession in me like Jossverse shows or VMars, but I've always enjoyed it, year after year. It has a sort of quiet, staying excellence. (Plus, GG vid! I don't think I've seen even one.)

But yeah, these CHARACTERS. All of them. It's a pretty intense little world. And FUNNY, my god. I think I have yet to get through an ep without laughing out loud at least twice.
I bet there are GG vids out there. Probably Luke/Lorelai, actually. (The one I'm thinking about is a Lorelai-'n'-Rory best friends-y vid.)

Also, Jess sucks. A lot. Because I hate him. And he sucks. Go away, Jess. You are a punkass and nobody likes you. Except Rory, for some stupid reason. Cause you wrote all over her fucking book, which if you did that to me I would kick your fucking ass and never talk to you again. Okay, maybe not that so much, but you suck. A lot.

FYI, we disagree about Jess. I like him. He's an underachiever, which I identify with pretty heavily. I'm not a fan of other people writing in my books, but oddly enough Jess didn't write in my books, possibly because he's, you know, fictional; and if Rory chooses not to make a big deal out of it, hey, no harm done. I have no investment in the Rory/Jess infatuation, but that doesn't mean I dislike Jess.

I identified with Dean, myself, since he was the prototypical nice guy, doing nice things for his nice girl. I don't have a clear picture of the GG seasons, so I don't know what all has happened by S2, so I'll stop trying to say things in case I accidentally spoil you. Hope you enjoy the rest of the show!
Oh, wait, one more thing. What's always grabbed me about the show is the Gilmore family dynamic, especially between the three generations of Gilmore women. Because Emily reminds me a lot of my own mom sometimes, so I really identify with Lorelai' ( ... )

It wouldn't surprise me at all to hear that the writers wanted five to seven years for their full story arc. Is that about right? You can tell me meta-info -- just no spoilers! *g*
