books!

I got freelance pay on Friday. A good chunk of that has to go to paying off the car's new alternator, the demise of the previous one having left me stranded overnight in Dundee, Illinois a few weeks ago, but there was enough left that I could in good conscience go on a serious book-acquisition excursion with truepennySo we went downtown and had lunch at a ( Read more... )

This is that obnoxious thing where I have to talk about everything on your list I've read. You should delete now if it's going to be too annoying to deal with.

Te Kaihau / The Windeater

There's a story about Simon in it. It hurts. And yeah -- that's never going on the cull list. I wasn't quite so stunned as you, since I take it as an article of faith that eventually every book in the world passes through the Strand, and the only problem is making sure that you're there when the books you want pass through. And anyone who says I made a little squeaking sound and grabbed the book off the shelf faster than I could blink is lying, because I was shopping alone and there were no witnesses.

I'll be very curious about what you think about Love Medicine and The Death of the Heart, because I love them (I don't know why Elizabeth Bowen is so unknown), and about Eva Moves the Furniture, because I've been hovering around buying it since I first read a review.

Okay, I lied -- I'm not going to talk about A Lost Lady or Tales from Neveryon ( ... )

Oh, I know. I loved it so much when I first read it. "Seeing is not necessarily believing: seeing is a matter of faith in sight" was scrawled on an index card and taped over my desk for years.

And anyone who says I made a little squeaking sound and grabbed the book off the shelf faster than I could blink is lying, because I was shopping alone and there were no witnesses.

Heh. Well, my own shock, giddiness, squeaking, and subsequent speechlessness can be vouched for by Truepenny. The two of us ought not to go bookseeking together. I can't imagine what havoc the *three* of us will wreak.

And: If I thought your talking about books you've read was obnoxious, I wouldn't have been reading your LJ for two years. But you are kind to warn me.

Congrats on finding the Hulme. I just love when something you've been searching for like that finally does show up in your life, preferably someplace unexpected--not to mention inexpensive. (i.e. it's not the same if you ordered it online at some hyper-marked-up price)

Yeah, exactly. I've had finds a bit like this a few times before, but never something I'd been looking for for so long, and never at 50% off. I'm still kind of giddy about it. Somehow I'm not surprised that you recognize this brand of elation. *g*
