Funny! I wish I had amusing stuff like that happen in my yard. At least while I was around (with my camera)... :) The squirrels back in Cleveland were insane. They'd just barrel right through you, no holds barred. I wonder what it is about them... Have you read the Yarn Harlot's ongoing battle with the squirrels in her yard? (They steal wool.)
Yeah, I know what you mean. I totally lucked out this morning; I was already taking pictures of the quail when the squirrel showed up. We don't have a lot of backyard shenanigans here, not nearly as much as we did in Indiana or North Carolina. Probably because here I have a glorified patio (as opposed to the three acres we owned in North Carolina). Still . . . when I'm patient enough to go sit out there with my camera, I do see cool stuff. I've gotten photos of golden eagles, and once a coyote scared some deer. Plus various other birds. And now, carnivorous squirrels! :D They are cute, that's for sure

Ground squirrels are native to this area, and live in burrows in the ground. We have a colony of them living in the hills behind our house. They're a bit notorious for being garden pests, but I think they're cute and I like them

The fox squirrel is way cuter. And it IS native to North America, if not California. So ... how did they get here? Did they hitchhike? It's not like they had to cross an ocean. Maybe they just kind of migrated here because they like the beach.
I don't think they're nearly as pesty as, say, eucalyptus trees.
LOL! I actually like eucalyptus trees. (I have happy childhood memories of one in an empty field across the street from the home in which I grew up. We used to play in it, and an owl lived there, so they don't seem pesty to me). I don't know how the fox squirrels got her - hitchhiking sounds reasonable. :D
I do like the ground squirrels, though, and I think they're very, very cute! I have some better pics of one that was on my fence this afternoon; I'll try and remember to post it tomorrow so you can see the cuteness! (The photos on Wiki don't do a good job of showing the cute). Then again, I think alligators and most bats are cute . . . so it's possible that my tastes might be a bit different than yours. :D
What cracks me up when I look at the first photo is the squirrel's front claws. For some reason, the way s/he is standing make it look like there are MEGA CLAWS OF DOOM on that front foot! Seriously, s/he could take out the quail with one swipe. I don't think squirrels really have gigantor claws (and the feet look normal in the other shot) . . . but maybe this is a mutant. Like the squirrel version of X-Men.
I have WOLVERINE SQUIRREL in my backyard! OH YEAH!!!!!!

My only issue with squirrels and the like is worrying about fleas or other parasites. Other than that, though - I agree, they're extremely cute. :D
