My absolute favourite version is Phantom by Susan Kay.

It adds an incredible amount of detail (especially about Erik's life prior to the Opera House), while still managing to stay remarkably true to LeRoux's original story.

I've had that book on my wish list for a while now. I think I'll move it up closer to the top. I should be able to order it from the library, which I will go do right now!

Thanks for reminding me about it! :)

You're entirely welcome! I'm always happy to point someone towards one of my favourite books.

I honestly don't think you'll be disappointed, especially if you enjoyed the original and the ALW (musical) versions.

Ooo, yes, fantastic book. Apparently it's way difficult to find now, too - I saw a copy on eBay going for around $25 a few months ago.

Have either of you ever heard the music to Phantom? (Not the ALW version, but one that was released around the same time. Wikipedia link here.) In some ways, I enjoy it much more than ALW's music, although the story deviates from the original a good deal.

Yes this is an great book. I would have to agree with you on how easy it is to sympathize with Erik even though he is rather monstrous. I love how the book went in to detail when the persian and Raoul were in the labyrinths below the Paris Opera House. Your pictures of the opera House are excellent. One day i wish that i could go there and see the famed Opera house for myself.

Little Connor with tiny nose to enable breastfeeding - sigh. Ever so cute.

Mark and I saw a ballet there a few years back - paid practically nothing for cheapest seats in house (right at back - almost no view) and a group didn't turn up so we got a box right above the orchestra to ourselves - fantastic, and awfully kind of the usher to offer us a free upgrade!

I can't thank you enough for sharing your photos. They are just awesome. I have noticed quite a few of your reviews in Librarything and enjoy them very much. Thank you so much for making the Phantom all the more exciting. It's my favorite too.
