Oh I luv this hard man!!! Once upon a time I really shipped this pairing (okay so I kinda still do) and this angst/love/confusion thing is just part of the appeal. I'm interpreting it as Rukia thought she would be happy by finally getting her Kaien, but deep down it wasn't the same as she thought it would be...you know cause of *cough Ichigo cough* and him being dead and all -_-;; Great work!
Kaien always seems like he would have been a wonderful first love for Rukia, except for the pesky thing about him being married. I can never get past that myself unless it was a somewhat open marriage and Miyako thought Rukia was hotsauce too, sigh. *grins* I don't think Rukia's thinking clearly enough to really parse her reasons for being happy or unhappy in this scenario, but she'd be a lot unhappier if she knew she just boinked a jar.
