Maria is curled up in a ball in the bed she and Michael share, staring at the wall, seeing nothing.

He's leaving soon.

He's leaving to fight another war she can't help him win.

She's oddly numb.

He's there, in the doorway - not leaning, this time, but standing tall, in his uniform.

She makes a small noise, to confirm that she's breathing and awake, but doesn't turn around.

Michael moves to the side of the bed, one hand dropping to stroke absently over her hair. He doesn't speak for now.
