Last month, Laurie and I celebrated our first anniversary by taking a moonlight cruise of New York Harbor on the 1920s-vintage schooner Shearwater. "Sailing! I'm sailing!!!"
The college I work for sits across from and has a one hundred acre tract on Lake Norman, a big, bad, dam-made lake north of Charlotte. They offer sailing classes every year, and pictures like these make me think learning to sail could eventually prove worthwhile. When it gets to the point that there's a little Ted Kennedy that pops out and says to get my butt on a jibb (I obviously don't know the terminology), I'll know it's time.

Laurie and I have talked about learning how to sail, but decided it probably would be a lot more enjoyable to enjoy the wind in our hair and let someone else worry about steering the boat. Then again, we have the advantage of a lot of tourist-type sailboats offering relatively inexpensive public sails in NYC.
