this is so poignant. i heart sf, even though i only get to visit. you're lucky to be a part of a great city.

I have spent much time in SF over the last 30 years and have seen jarring changes. I was out for a week last year and could not believe the end of normal decay that is found in living cities. I fear that I will see SF turned into a museum piece for rich people like Paris or Venice.

What you wrote is lovely.

i went down to my old neighborhood in the 24th/folsom area, and it's so changed now in only like a couple months. most of the latino businesses have been replaced by weird artsy copies. it's so sad. it feels like a completely differently place now, and definitely not like home.

Wow, this is really meaningful to me. I feel like I've been in mourning for SF for a while now, and it's getting more acute as I have to slowly lift the veil on my denial over the fact that I can no longer afford to live here.

And now that I see the new span as a symbol of that, I like it a little less. I'm still excited to drive over it, mostly for the views, but I'm sad about the loss of the cantilevered section too. It's so industrial and utilitarian, fitting for looking over the ports of Oakland.
