Was "hip hip hurrah" originally an anti-Semitic taunt?

Dear Cecil:

What is the origin of the expression "hip hip hurrah"? According to one book I've read, it derives from an abbreviation of the Latin Hierusylema Est Perdita, "Jerusalem is destroyed." Apparently, medieval antisemites yelled "Hep! Hep!" as they exiled or executed innocent Jews. Can this be true? Can modern expressions such as hip, ( Read more... )

I read once that "hip" was derived from opium dens. See, people who smoked opium on a regular basis developed sore hips from lying on their sides on the mats, which were usually very stiff. Just to throw that out there.

The Romans invented this chant after the destruction of Jerusalem. It was a hard battle and not ordinary to create chants of these types. Jerusalem is destroyed = HEP

Huzzah means to heaven, the Jews have been sent to heaven
