So

So I think I might join the Army. Offered me a sweet deal. Lord knows I need to escape the bullshit and horribleness of the last year. Need to get over myself too. Can the Army help me accomplish those goals? Or am I just asking for a bullet to the brain or an IED to the legs? Who knows.

my friend joined the army after leaving rehab, and it seemed to give him some direction. basic training def helps you "get over yourself" if that's what you feel you need to do. just don't go and get yourself killed in iraq or anything

According to something I got in the mail today; if you join the Marines, you get a free Marine Corps Hydration Pack!

you aren't going to be joining the army. You'd have to fight in Iraq. Are you actually considering joining?

Yea, actually, I've been talking to a recruiter every day this week. This is a very real possibility. I'm not taking this decision lightly, but for a couple of reasons I think this might be the best course of action that I take for the next four years. I've started my PT training, and narrowing down the MOS I want to consider attaching myself too. I also have been offered to go to Officer Candidate School, which if I pass I'll be a commissioned officer. So, if it happens, I'm going all the way and not just enlisting and a Private.

I don't know Henry - My dad joined the army right before Vietnam, and he said under no circumstances would he ever join today. My cousin is in the Army right now and has been for the past 6 or so years. Be careful what you ask for/what they tell you, that you are going to get because most likely you will not. My dad went in as a cartographer and ended up as an MP. My cousin went in as a satellite controller or something, and ended up as a foot soldier in Afghanistan. Just be careful.

Did he enlist or go as an officer?

I believe he went in as an officer, but i'm not entirely 100% positive. It may not be a terrible experience if you have your mind set to it. He is actually looking into becoming a Green Beret.

I believe that people have to do what's best for them, whether it's joining the army, signing up with the PeaceCorps, whatever. But, there is a war going on, and therefore joining the military right now is more dangerous than during peacetime. So you should ask yourself whether you're ready to see combat, to go to Iraq or Afghanistan, and maybe be there awhile. And if you are, if you really feel that this is where you're meant to be, then my prayers go with you.
