Histories of technology (*cough*) tend to treat the breast-strap horse harness as something that was rendered obsolete by the padded collar and disappeared by the year 1200 AD. Yeah, the new inventions are always flashier and receive more attention than the continuation of the old. I know you're critiquing professionals here, but the example that comes more readily to mind is from a student this week: no more animal or human labor was used after the invention of the steam engine.
