Anthony Lane reviews "Superman Returns" for the New Yorker, and begins with his view of the audience demographics:

"Dotted here and there will be Supermaniacs-some of them sporting red underpants, others in panty hose of royal blue, none of them happily married." ( Brilliant. )

I love Anthony Lane's reviews, generally, because they're snarky, smart, and, above all, beautifully written. I mean, the man has a clear love of the essay as a literary form.

But yeah, I was annoyed that he fell into the classic "fans as unsocialized geeks" thing, presuming that fans are unmarried, etc.

I mean, gah. Having just gone to Con.txt, it's like doubly insulting, because there are all these hot, smart, wonderful fannish women and... hell, I spent a half hour talking with two other fans about our kids! And there was a well-attended panel on "Slash and the Significant Other."

Sigh.

Wake up, Anthony.
