It seems to me that the author is describing her experience with the law of diminishing returns in romance - the first time you fall in love it's very powerful. But it fades, and you move on. Then you fall in love again... but it fades faster, and you move on. Then soon you begrudgingly give up the 'ideal' that you were looking for, that made you feel amazing when you found something close to it, and over the years you become more pragmatic about the process, continually re-evaluating what would really make you happy, or at least content.

So the author is fighting a two front war, memories of how powerful the first loves were AND her mythological ideals of romantic relationships. (It's frightening how many TV shows she references, seeming to confuse fiction with reality).
