Title: Family Ties

Characters (in this chapter): Macau, Taiwan, Hong Kong/New China, England and Ireland.

Rating: 12

Warnings: Family bonding and teenage angst.

Summary: Uh, I need to be banned from the kink meme or monsters like this happen? Essentially, Scotland leaves the UK, which gives Northern Ireland an excuse to up and out as well, which leaves England and Wales all alone. Oh yeah, and this somehow leads to World War Three.

The day dawned bright and early, and Macau stretched his still half-asleep limbs out and leaned on his balcony railing, overlooking the ocean and the harbor where there had to be at least 50 ships docked. Ships full of WDF soldiers being sent back home, to whomever they belonged to. He'd chatted to some of the Portuguese prisoners himself, which had been interesting. And nostalgic.

Stupid undercover mission. Not even Brazil could tell him what had happened to Portugal.

"Macau?" Taiwan called from the sliding patio door. "Are you still not dressed? Come on, we're going in twenty minutes."

The island city scratched the back of his head and sighed. It was too early for this. "I got it, I got it." He grumbled, going straight for the bathroom, stripping off on the way. "How's China doing."

He could hear the pout in her voice as she leaned on the other side of the bathroom door. "Don't talk like that, just call him Li Shui until... until it's not so painful anymore." A pause. "Not everyone can shrug this off like you."

"Cause I don't care. It's not like he particularly wanted me until I was gone either." the teen grumbled, sticking his head under the shower and scrubbing hard. He'd accidentally slept with gel in his hair. Ick.

"Macau..."

"Wouldn't look at me twice until Portugal made me rich and useful. And then, oh then, sure. Come back now Macau, I miss you aru." He gargled water, spitting it at the wall. "Whatever, you know you wanted independence too."

"It's not the same thing as wanting him dead and you know it."

Maybe it was a good idea not to piss off his sister. Macau backed down a little. "Yeah, well, that was his choice. All we can do is roll with it." He stepped out of the shower, grabbing a towel and rubbing at his hair until it was sufficiently dry, then wrapping another around his waist. "We've got a war to finish for him, you know." he added, standing by the mirror and styling his hair effectively.

"... you have a weird way of expressing you miss someone."

"I wha-"

The sound of the front door opening halted further conversation. "Li Shui!"

"Having fun without me?" the new China sounded even more monotone than usual. "Car's here but we can leave whenever Macau's done doing his hair."

Taking offense to that, Macau stuck his head out of the bathroom door. "Don't have to be so cruel to me, Li Shui."

"Don't have to be so distant suddenly, Rui." Li Shui was wearing robes of his usual fashion, red and black, but now he seemed to have added yellow to the hems. Huh. Whatever. "Guess I won't give you a present."

Somewhere in the back of Macau's mind, a "kaching!" sound effect could be heard. "What kind of present is this?" he asked, sidling up to the shorter Nation with a wide grin and a wiggle of the eyebrows. Li Shui stared momentarily at his state of undress, still wearing only the towel, before raising his own eyebrows in response. Certainly a more obvious gesture.

"You'll see when we get to the meeting. I have announcements to make to the rest of Asia."

This made both siblings pause. "Wait, wait, you mean, you invited all of Asia?"

"East Asia, yes." he nodded. "With China... gone and North Korea neutralised, we need to decide the official position of our section of Asia. As a world power it's our duty to lead the way. Though, in truth, it was Japan that suggested it to me in the first place." He flashed them his phone, a text detailing the same idea on screen. "The old government threw itself into the war to the extent that many of the people suffered. The male population has been cut by a third, the female by one seventh. Industry is failing to meet such high production standards and people are being punished for not achieving the impossible. And on top of all that, the West still want co-operation in pincering Russia and forcing him to end the war."

He shifted, and looked to the side. "I can't fix that on my own. I need you to come with me, and I need the rest of our family to get on for at least a few years so these people-- my people won't vanish."

Macau clapped him on the shoulder. "Alright, we get it, no need for drama." A sly grin and a quick pat on the ass, and he waltzed off to his room to get dressed. "Leave that to the Koreas when we get to this meeting thing."

----

England lounged in his tent, rolling over on the bed roll he had. Somewhere under his tent there was a rock, and it was sticking up directly into his back where he believed it was poking Stoke-on-Trent quite painfully, considering that he was still sore down to Birmingham.

Someone threw something at him, feeling it bounce off his head. Looking over, it was a piece of paper, crumpled up. Ireland's handwriting. He unscrewed it and read it.

Alright, I'll let you take the lead, but once we get to Moscow I call dibs on being the first to smack Russia in the mouth. You did promise me, way back, at my house, that I could. Consider it a Christmas present or something.

Fumbling for a pen, he wrote back.

Only if I get to break his kneecaps and toss him in the river afterwards.

Notes:
- Aw, family bonding, ain't it sweet?
- A little more on Macau, since he hasn't appeared in the main story yet: Macau was much like Portugal's version of Hong Kong. Colonised in the 16th century, Portugal basically paid 500 silver for him, and that was where China stopped caring. Macau prospered under Portugal's rule, a key port in trade, particularly between China and Japan. He's older than Hong Kong, established way earlier, but when Hong Kong came along his importance dwindled a little. Not that he cared, be became a free-trade port and to this day is a tax haven as well as a gambling hot spot. He's also slightly yandere for Hong Kong, in a weird sort of way. Design nicked from Candesceres.

Also, in celebration of part 70 (sweet Jesus I have no life) I now have a shiny new Index! 8D Specific page for Family Ties chapters is here, and Bonus Bonds is now un-friend-locked and here, containing bits of the fic that I couldn't fit in, or were brought up later.
