Again, seeing this ep in light of Cas in season 12 declaring he is saving the Winchesters no matter what--it's a fascinating juxtaposition and shows just how much Cas has evolved!
Indeed. Was I talking about this with you? Forgive me if I repeat myself, but the other day someone commented on one of my old fics, implying that I didn't know how to write Cas... and I went back and read the fic (written and set during S5) and realized that I DID know how to write Cas, it's just that Cas has changed so much that the commenter seemed to have forgotten what he used to be like. :P
Cas has had the most personality changes in the series, and sometimes it's pretty whiplash inducing... but, at the same time, it's really amazing how you can watch his progressive humanization... one of my favourite questions in S10 was when Metatron kept needling Cas about "what even are you?" because he's not really an angel anymore, but he's also not a man. Anyway, I wish the writers would explore that a little more.
