i really gotta get my S4 DVDs.... and then i think the kids and i might really sit down and watch starting with 1x01 - i know they want to. just need to actually DO it....

Very true. I think there's a lot of resentment there, too. It's the contradictory and irrational kind known only to family, though- I think Sam resented "having" to be the protector rather than the protected, despite how much he's railed against those roles and resents it when Dean (or their father) is/was in charge. It's like it is his *right* as youngest, his place in the family, his to rebel against.

Exactly exactly! There's nothing rational about how we react to family-roles, and that's exactly what I mean. Sam may have made a show of rejecting the "protected" role, but when it comes right down to it, that's where he's most comfortable, that's what he knows - with Dean being vincible and more vulnerable than usual, Sam is a fish-out-of-water, and it's THAT feeling that he's resenting, not necessarily Dean himself. Unlike Dean, Sam doesn't know how to juggle being a Hunter AND a protector.
