There had been a huge error, the guards told him as they approached his cell, before the warden even began to make his announcement. Apparently they received a letter from the Ministry of Hades exonerating him from his crimes. Whatever it had been that he had done, they decided to give him a full pardon and he was to be released at once.
Unfortunately, there was the little problem with night quickly approaching. Knowing the horrors that came out at night and the significant distance they would need to travel to get him to the safety beyond the prison's domain. So instead they had a waiting room set up and converted into a temporary room for him to safely stay the night free from molestation from the monsters of the night.
The guards escorted him into the visitor's room in the wall and led him down a long corridor, finally welcoming him to the waiting room they had offered. It was a quaint room, with an ugly green couch that had been converted into a makeshift bed by means of four freshly fluffed pillows and several blankets and sheets. The walls were an ugly yellow wallpaper with small violet flowers patterned along the top and the bottom. In some places the wallpaper had stripped away with age, revealing the solid concrete behind it. A picture of dogs playing poker had been hung directly overhead, while on the wall with the door a picture of a stern-looking Amish woman working on a loom stared out of the picture, silently judging the room with an air of disapproval.
A TV had been set up opposite the couch and connected by cable into the opposite wall. Above the television was another picture, this one an actual black and white photograph of a well-dressed gentleman sitting behind a desk and looking up at the camera. A small plaque underneath read, "Clancy Witherspoon, 2nd Warden, 111-121". The last wall had a painting of a ballroom with three couples dancing. In the background a seventh figure stood silhouetted, hands in his pockets and shoulders slumped as he leaned against the ballroom wall.
Next to the couch a stand had been set and an electric alarm/radio had been placed on an oaken end table with a single drawer. Were he to look inside the drawer, he would find several books and magazines had been left: a dictionary, a bible, the Qu'ran, and a magazine called "Prisoner's World." A remote control for the TV was also in the drawer. The time on the clock currently read 10:00 PM.
Another door led to a very small tiled bathroom. There was a sink, a mirror, a toilet, and a towel dispenser. The guards apologized that there wasn't a bath, but this was the best they could do on such short notice. In the bathroom was also another picture of a sailing yacht at sea on calm shores.
As soon as Watari was inside the room, the guards smiled and wished him the best of luck, and they'd check on him in the morning. There was something about the look of amusement on the one guard's face that didn't quite fit, but there was no time for inquiry as the guards left him alone in the room with his thoughts.
