Pennsylvania's rainy autumns had always felt more like monsoon season in the Amazon to Ethan. Nowhere in the US, aside from Seattle (and maybe some places in Florida), needed that much fucking rain. There were times when he was amazed that the entire city of Philadelphia hadn't been washed away by a massive flood already ( ... )

She heard his voice over the constant patter of the rain and the swishing of the water around her legs as she walked through it, and sighed in relief, even if it was a little premature. She had no idea what state he was in yet.

Madison peered down the street, and she could just make him out through the rain not too far from her. She redoubled her wading efforts, almost tripping several times on unseen obstacles beneath the water until she slowed again. She'd rather get there slowly than not at all.

"Ethan. Thank God you're okay," she called when they were finally out of shouting distance and close enough to talk over the rain.

"I can't believe you're here," Ethan replied as they closed the distance between them. Once they were close enough, he reached out to Madison, pulling her into a hug. An awkward gesture in the middle of a flood, perhaps, but emotional nonetheless.

After a moment he pulled away, and a rare smile lit up his face. "I was afraid I'd never see you again," he said. A dramatic statement, but an all-too-real possibility for a resident of Bell Pointe.

Madison was a little surprised by the hug. From her perspective, after all, it had only been a little while since she'd last seen Ethan. But she hugged him back anyway, because Ethan Mars was difficult enough to get close to at the best of times, and besides, she was infinitely glad he seemed to be okay despite...whatever had happened.

"Well, I'm here," she said when he pulled back. His smile reassured her more than anything else could.

She looked at him without saying anything further for a few seconds, her eyes searching his face for answers as she smiled faintly back at him. "We should get out of this rain, huh?" she suggested, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Where's your place? It has to be in better shape than mine."
