Great idea for a fic! I haven't watched Damage in a while, but Dana seemed right on target to me. (She also kind of reminds me of River from Firefly...) I kind of wondered during the episode why she only flashed on the Chinese Slayer and Nikki's memories of Spike, but not Buffy's, so it was cool to see some of that here.
I also liked Buffy's confusion, thinking Spike was dead and not totally putting together what Dana was saying. (I love the idea of Dana being the one to tip her off, and I think it'd be awesome if you chose to continue this in a Spuffy fashion.)
Giles is hilarious, acting as though it's a great historical discovery and Dana's like, "Uh, I'm a PERSON" in her own special way.
The story about the Ugandan Slayer was tragic, as was Dana's "She died twice. I died three thousand times." Awesome, awesome line.
P.S. The expression is "one AND the same," not in.
I confess to wondering quite a bit after watching "Damage" if Dana had some Buffy-memories in there and, damn but that would be messed up, remembering someone both as your murderer and your love interest...
If I did continue this, I think I would have Dana clue Buffy in. (With a disastrous and ill-advised trip to LA soon after!)
Can't say the idea doesn't appeal. Though I'd want to actually research Dana's mental illness first before writing too much on it, and how likely am I, really, to research? :P
"one AND the same"? Woah. That looks wrong to me... but it makes more logical sense. Am I discovering another weird Midwestism, or just a bad case of hearing?
That would be pretty messed up. I wondered if Dana had memories of Spike getting his soul and saving the world. Would she feel any guilt, for punishing him after he's changed, for choosing him, of all people, to exact her revenge on her abuser? On the other hand, considering the nature of Buffy and Spike's relationship in season six, those memories might have only added to the trauma.
I do think Buffy finding out from Dana would make an awesome continuation. (I had a fleeting thought that maybe if you didn't want to, and didn't mind, I might take a crack at it, but then I remembered I have my own post-Damage Spuffy that I never finished.)
I think "one in the same" is just one of those misheard phrases (like "another think/thing coming") that keeps getting mangled until the wrong version becomes almost as common as the right one.
It'd be some fun writing! That's for sure. And because you know me, it would end up being a very bad time for Spike. :P
By no means hold off on it because you think I might do it... I'm sure the both of us would take it in different directions and I'd love to see what you'd do.
Heee love the Principal Snyder icon! Armin Shimerman rox!
This was excellent. Damage was always one of my favourite episodes, and I love the way you're using Dana here - tackling both the grander themes of Slayer vs vampire, Slayer vs watcher, and the personal angle. I love the little glimpses of actual Dana that show up here and there between the "possessions", and of course that she basically tells Buffy that Spike is alive and Buffy doesn't realise it...
