The company already employs numerous eager young graduates who - at least at first - like nothing better to be at Mr. Luthor's beck and call all day, taking his verbal (and occasionally physical) abuse while telling

She appears in the doorway with some trepidation, after taking her time, building up the courage to return. She takes a breath and finds herself needlessly concealing a smile when she sees him.

She knows he can sense her presence. "I thought you'd be more anxious to see me."

Oddly enough, he finds that he can't conceal his happiness at her return. "Martha!" he says, turning slightly towards the doorway. "Come in, come in. I am indeed very anxious to... well. How are you?"

Martha doesn't remember him ever asking how she was before. And so she isn't sure how to respond. And isn't sure he will really want the answer.

She takes a few steps closer to him. "Very anxious to...what?"

Whenever she's around, he finds himself groping for good manners... and it rarely seems to have the desired effect.

"To see you," he says with a half-smile. "Come in, Martha. Sit down. Can I pour you a drink?"
