Midgar was due for completion in little over a week, or thereabouts. Zexion had got in touch with Lexaeus, which Xigbar had expected, and Lexaeus had passed on the message, which Xigbar had not expected. The gist of it was simple enough; stay away from Midgar. It was immediately obvious that Xigbar had something on his mind, because he was neither asleep, nor feigning it. His usual position was splayed back, eye closed, appearing unaware, even though he could quickly prove he wasn't when it turned out he'd been earwigging for the past half an hour ( ... )

"You heard," Xigbar replied, but that reaction worried him. It worried him extra hard because it was from Axel, who'd done some shitty things but was, deep down, less of an asshole than some of them.

"Don't go getting ideas, this is way too much for us to handle, even if we wanted to. I don't want anyone running off to be a hero because you'll only get yourself killed." He grinned, cruelly. "You're good, flamesilocks, but you're not that good. Stay out of it."

He stood up too fast and the chair clattered back behind him. The hollow sound of wood hitting wood resounded and echoed, though Axel wasn't sure if the peculiar void in his own thoughts was making it seem louder than it actually was.

"I..." He stopped and turned to pick the chair up, his movements feeling fuzzy, muffled and strangely distant. He closed his eyes to try and order everything. He had to think. Simply reacting wasn't doing him any good. "When?"

Xigbar shook his head. Axel wasn't in any mood to listen to him, obviously. This was one of the reasons he hadn't wanted to tell him, or anyone.

"A little over a week. If you've got ideas of trying to get people out, think again. You're short on time and resources." Xigbar shrugged. "Not to mention that people aren't gonna believe you."

Yeah, Xigbar thought, 'cause you're gonna be totally chill with leaving however many others to die when it comes to the crunch. You've got a heart again, Axel; you're not quite the same team killing asshole who knocked off half our group any more.

And you never did shake that soft spot for the wide eyed innocents.

Out loud, Xigbar said, "That still means you gotta get there, get in, get them, convince them, and get out." He shook his head, "And you'd better hope that they're the type who'll go quietly instead of causing a big panic by trying to warn other people. Between a stampede for the exits and what's gonna go off, your odds of getting out get really slim, kid. To say nothing of what happens if people outside find out you knew about it in advance. I'm not having people associated with us bring that sort of unfavourable attention onto all of us, if you catch my drift." Xigbar sounded pleasant enough, but that was when he was being most dangerous.

"Look," he sighed, waving away most of what he'd said. "This girl saved my life -- I wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for her. I just... can't let her die like that."

He paused, looking as though he had a bigger, longer argument to throw back at him. His hands were clenched on the table in front of him and his breathing was a little short. In the end, he shook his head and finished somewhat lamely with;

"Get it memorized."
