It's funny that you read Love in the Time of Cholera quickly over a summer once, but couldn't finish One Hundred Years of Solitude, while for me it was exactly the opposite. Can't say I really recommend 100 Years, though.

I was a big fan of this in my angsty youth.

A lot of good books on that list! One I can recommend that you haven't read is Life of Pi - it's brilliant and FUNNY. I loved it. :D By Yann Martel.
