[my music] : Thereminworld (Frappr map)

Thereminworld (www.thereminworld.com) is a very good resource for thereminists and those interested in theremin. There is an opportunity to put yourself on the world map. Which is what I did, especially since I needed it for my studies :-)

So far there are not too many names on the map, only 76 people (including me, or more precisely, my project, Helga's Ephemeris). The worldwide community of theremin players is very impressive, and the theremin cult is represented in its entirety on the Internet. I hope that the players from Scandinavia will soon join as well (I personally know two or three who more or less actively use the theremin in their music).

Unfortunately, Russia lags behind in terms of playing music on the theremin. The homeland of Lev Theremin cannot boast of a large army of musicians who master this instrument (in both senses, those who have it at their disposal, and know how to play it). This sad situation is due to the fact that in the USSR (and subsequently in Russia) the theremin was never mass-produced (although various circuit solutions have long been published - for example, in the "Radio" magazine). While in the USA the RCA Victor company and others have been mass-producing theremins since the late 20s (including Bob Moog, who built theremins in the 60s, before he switched to developing his famous synthesizers).

Theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore said in an interview with Bob Moog (1967): “There is no point in giving lessons to people who don’t have an instrument. In order for them to fully enjoy the theremin, they need the instrument and practice. Those who come to me to play my instrument for half an hour do so simply out of curiosity.”

Update 2011: The Frappr map no longer works. Pity!

Here are my two tracks on the topic:

Helga's Ephemeris - When The Full Moon Shines (Tir-na Nog'th)

Helga's Ephemeris - Dream 17 ("Runology" album)
