Holiday in the Mendip, part 4 (and final): 2 days spent not walking the East Mendip Way

Oct 25, 2020 06:54

Well, every day of my life so far has been spent not walking the East Mendip Way, but I was especially not walking it on Friday the 2nd and Saturday the 3rd of October. The Friday walk should have consisted of a 6 miles from Wells to Shepton Mallet (graded Easy), and the Saturday of 13 miles to Frome (also graded Easy). My friend J (byslanted Read more... )

How great that you were able to have an actual holiday during these trying times, and to be able to share it with a friend. byslantedlight finds the coziest places to live, doesn't she? I stayed with her a few years back and loved the cottage she'd found on a farm in Evercreech.

The George is lovely! I can see why you'd want to stay there.

You've also visited J in Evercreech? That is so neat! Her current place is smart as well as cosy. It has motion-sensitive lights built into the bathroom mirror - I was very impressed!

Did you get to explore much of the area during your visit?

We drove to her place and then went out to explore Old Wardour Castle. The next day we visited Stonehenge, Old Sarum, and Salisbury. It was excellent!

You are a big fan of castles I recall! That's some good exploring. I'm embarrassed to say I've never been to Salisbury, and my family lived in Wiltshire for years.

I'm not too keen on four posters. Any horror fan will tell you that the canopies are often weighted and rigged to descend and squish you in your sleep!
Reckon you were lucky...

Ooh! I hadn't thought of that. Maybe that's why the upgrade cost was so modest - a reflection of how many victims it has already claimed.

I meant to comment days ago, but I'm glad I was delayed now, because yesterday I accidentally drove past The Poacher's Pocket! It wasn't at all the place I thought it was, and I think we shall have to make a point of trying it next time you're down this way.

Lol - I suppose it is charming around here, which is the fun of being a tourist, because I tend to see the work-a-day side to the place, and forget to describe it as anything else. Though I do still stop and stare happily at its charming bits. *g*

Really pleased you enjoyed the rest of Detectorists too - isn't it great? It bears re-watching a ridiculous number of times too, because its one of those shows with lots of little subtleties that you only spot once you're more familiar with other things that have happened. Love clever shows like that - unconsciously clever shows like that, which don't make a big fuss about it, but just meander gently on their way...

You're braver than I am, going to the cinema, but I do want to see Bill and Ted, so I'm glad you've given it a good ( ... )

I'm glad to hear that the Poacher's Pocket looks worth a visit. It's fairly close to Kilver Court, I think?

I went to the cinema at least 8 times, I think, and there were only ever 4 or 5 people in the room, so it didn't feel risky - or economically viable! I haven't got around to watching that episode of Blackadder, yet, though I am currently working my way through Monty Python on Netflix and looking forward to finding out which episode has the "Bath and Wells" sketch.

i was surprised that Frome had direct trains on a Sunday - and such quick trains at that.

I'm so glad to hear that you and Liz are now actively in touch. I'm looking forward to hearing how your coffee goes. So much to catch up on!
