tonight i went out to eat with the fam. we went to a steakhouse. on the short drive over, i got to thinking about america and american identity. ( thoughts on american/regional cultures )

The midwesterners here form strong ties to each other, and also have debates about what counts as the Midwest. Still, it's almost a form of small acceptance when I (a Midwesterner from MN) will talk with a friend (Midwesterner from Ohio) about a new person I met, and just saying that he or she is also a Midwesterner is instant cred. We feel there are certain explicit things about how we act and what values we hold that other parts of the country can't quite understand, and this makes us quietly unique.

it's so funny how that is. i mean, i felt the same way in china. but it's not something i ever really thought about till i got away from here.

living in california and with 5 girls from the east coast taught me more about the midwest and being from the midwest than i would have ever cared to realize i know.. man, like, NO ONE knew what puppy chow was when i made it. (but they liked it) wierd stuff like that.
