I found that with music when I was in japan, when we went karaoke-ing, they kept picking 'the carpenter's' songs for me to sing, but I've never actually heard their songs before, much to their surprise. They were like 'all westerners know the carpenters'..

Hey now! The Carpenters are MUCH better than Brittany!! Maybe I'm the only one who grew up on oldies, but I love the Carpenters!

oh, i like the carpenters too and was singing along. it's not that, for the most part, people here pick out really bad american music or really unknown stuff. it's that they make really random stuff super-popular. and if it's really popular here, they think it must be really popular back home too. and there's such a limited range of really popular american music that it doesn't take long for a song to feel overplayed. know what i mean?

That's really interesting. I'm not too suprised about the Chinese students liking horrible American pop crap, though. One of the most popular German musicians with some college age Americans a few years ago was Blumchen, who's music was supposed to be geared towards 13 year old girls. (Oh yes, and I actually love her first 2 CDs by the way! =))

P.S.
Aren't those "Avenue Q" songs hilarious?
