when i was in england, let me tell you what i missed. i missed yellow soda. i missed snow. those were the only things that made me feel like i couldn't live there (sadly enough). but i missed having my computer in my room. i missed having a cd player (i didn't want to shell out money for something i couldn't bring home). i missed a lot of my stuff that i couldn't bring for the one semester because it was too big. it was nice to get back to people who'd known me for more than a month or two. i think it'll be the same way in china. because i'm not going to stay, i'll leave a lot here. hopefully, by staying for a year instead of just three months, i'll make some better connections with people.
did you have any kind of transitional period during which you missed some food brand or access to movies you love or anything?
Actually no, because there was a whole bunch of new stuff I hadn't ever seen. It kept me busy exploring. I can only imagine that China will be the same (if not more). When everything is new and strange, you need to find the resources within yourself to stay happy ... being self sufficient to that extent is a challenge, and a great source of confidence when you can manage.
