I never thought I liked teens and twenties fashions, but I have liked some of the looks on Downton Abbey. I hate myself in waist-less dresses. You may view the carnage:

I never realized that "Beauty" was a color! I wonder if some of the samples have changed. "Sky" seems rather green in the first set.

Yeah, I am concerned--I attempted to make a dress from the one-hour book once, and I ended up throwing it out. I couldn't stand how fat it made me look. But, it seems ladies in the 20s, no matter their figure, wore the fashions because they were fashionable, just like today. It seems more the point of the style of the day was to create a rectangular canvas in which to pile all manner of decoration.

I did make a dress from this tutorial (http://dressmakingresearch.com/1928_draping_a_magic_dance_frock.htm), only the bodice--I draped the skirt for a more 1924 style. I have to say, it was incredibly easy and flattering, I think because I fit it at the hips. However, that was 25 lbs ago.

But, I do like the earlier, transitional style that still have a waist. They look kind of barrel-like in fashion drawings, but look nice on real people, it seems.
