Raising Sons: a Summary

I put the LJ version behind a cut .

I went to an interesting seminar last night on Raising Sons. Unfortunately 1.5 hours is not really enough time to get the heart of the matter. It does tend to raise questions though...

1. Boys in our culture are doing well and we do not need to be concerned about the way they are being raised.

This is obviously false. We need to be concerned about all our children regardless of gender. The first step, in my mind, is doing away with all of the uber-feminist "anything you can do I can do better" rhetoric and finally ACCEPT THE FACT that male and female brains develop differently. Society is not ready to accept this yet - it's not P.C., and I think that's B.S. - until they do, our education system will continue to do our children a huge disservice.

2. Women are naturally more nurturing than men.

I think this *used* to be true, but no longer. nick_44, for one, is the primary caregiver in his household, and I think he's very nurturing.

3. Parents/guardians should encourage their sons to be independant at an earlier age than their daughters.We should encourage ALL children to be independent, as well as dependent. Kids need to be able to play and entertain themselves alone, as well as function in groups. Group ( ... )
