I was happy that we got the continuity here with why the Winchesters got such crappy deals at the crossroads. Them being Winchesters made good sense, because, you know, it sucks to be a Winchester, but Hell was on a schedule, and they needed John and Dean soon.
Along the same lines tho Dean didn't make the deal until right before John got out. So maybe that is why John was so sad in AHBL2 cause he knew what Dean was going to face and wasn't sure Dean would be able to make it and then the sort of pain Dean would feel afterwards. Cause really there was only a few hours between the deal being made and John getting out. They probably taunted him with that and knowing Alastair he probably didn't give him the option to get off the rack at that point just to be a prick. Or maybe he did and that's how John got out by instead of torturing someone he made a break for it since the doors were being opened. I'm thinking it was more of a timing thing like that. Alastair taunts him and offers just before the gate opens John says ok, gets off the rack but then stabs the f*** out of Al and climbs his way out of the pit. Plus that sounds all cinamatic like something that would happen on the show.... and I'm almost wanting to write a one shot for it now too... or at least read one.

Oh, please write that! I agree with you completely, and I think it's exactly what John would have done - and I bet Dean knows it, too. Alisdair specifically says that John never broke, not that John never got off the rack, so... yeah.
YES. THAT. (although that kinda makes John = Luke and Dean = Leia... when we all know John is Obi Wan! *g*... so, I think people's speculation that Dean was shown Sam dealing with the CRD and agreeing to step down to make sure Sam didn't make a deal works even better!)
