The subjects are Imogen Cunningham and Twinka (a 1970’s model), taken at Yosemite in 1974. It has a significance for photography and particularly photography of the nude. Imogen Cunningham was an important photographer of the nude, and indeed had the courage to be her own subject, in work when she was aged 23 in 1906. As a woman photographer before the first world war, this was very challenging and innovative. She was a member of the F64 group exhibition in 1932 in San Francisco.
In this image I am not sure if she is directing her model or they are discussing what Judy Dater, the actual photographer of both, is doing. But of course it is also a contrast between an old woman and a young woman, perhaps contemplating, the one what she once was and the other what she will be.
