I also have a C&C cage for my hog. You can make any shape/size you like since you are building it yourself, mine is 2x2 but has two levels. Check out http://www.guineapigcages.com/ for info on the cages and ideas ( ... )

I feed Ender the same stuff the breeder uses. He really likes it. I did buy a Blue Buffalo bag and give him a little at a time. I thought he might ignore it, but he scarfs that down as well. You're supposed to slowly wean them off the old stuff.

Hedgehog Central has a list of dried catfoods and ingredients plus recommendations on their forums. They also have a lot of good info about cages and health in their "stickies" under each section.

This is what Ender is living in:

I use fleece liners on the bottom. I didn't like the aspen bedding or finding it all over the house.

I like large cages, solid bottoms, bar tops -- think 'rabbit cage' and you'll get the idea. I'd say that this - http://www.target.com/mdp/B0002AS42Y/ref=sr_qi_1_2? -- would be the smallest you want, at 16x18x30.

I myself recommend using fleece and fabric liners. Yes, it means an extra load of laundry or two in a week. But there are no shavings, no dust, no mess all over the floor near the cage. In the winter, if your room is drafty, you can cover it (or mostly cover it) with a blanket.

Hope this helps.
