My hedgehog, Popcorn, is very sweet and healthy, but I cannot for the life of me get her to eat fruits or vegetables.  She'll eat certain meats just fine, but she won't touch fruits or veggies, and I'm worried about how good her diet is.  I wonder if maybe I'm just not choosing the right fruits and veggies?  What extras do you feed your hedgies so ( Read more... )

Definitely offer rejected things again occasionally. They can take a long time to accept something as food.

It may help to mix some veggie in with the meat (babyfood makes this really easy, and you can often find premixed formulas). You might even possibly try cutting down on the meat proportion over time as they get used to the flavor of the veggie as food.

Bananas usually go over well, most other fruits and veggies are dependent on their mood, meat is of course a crowd fave.

It's really funny when they get used to baby food treats and then I give them something fresh and chopped up and they spend all night trying to lick it up instead of just eating it. :p

Hedgehogs are insectivores in the wild. They really don't require fruits and veggies. If you really want to treat them...try little pieces of chicken or cat treats.

I think our hoggy likes a little tinned sweetcorn (with no additives). I forget what else though (in the way of fruit & veg), as my other-half tends to take care of those little occasional extras.

They are very picky over fruit & veg generally though - so it's suck-it-and-see really.

Careful though... too much fruit or veg and they get the squits!

oh, (sugar snap) peas too - and even a little brocolli (although she mainly prefers just to stand on that).

Ender really liked bananas for a while. Then I started giving him other foods. Now I'm lucky if he eats half the banana slice. He does eat the piece I put in with the mealworms (their last meal)

I was giving him zucchini, which he wouldn't touch. Then I started slicing the center very very thin and chopping it up over his eggs. He'll eat that now. Of course, he doesn't chew the seeds.

Just keep trying stuff.

Kenji is strictly a meal worm only kind of guy. He refuses to eat any other treats I put in for him, other than the occasional egg slice or two.

They can be just as picky as any human I suppose.

Now our dogs ...well they'll eat ANYTHING! *palmface*
