mine hate water as well, and as for having a hedgehog in CA, i stayed with someone out there who had a degu (another illegal pet in cali) and they didn't have any problems. i don't really know how they'd ever know you've got him unless the cops are in your house sometime or something.

i honestly don't think it's an issue. i'm from alabama, where they are illegal, yet my first experience with a hedgehog was in a store in my hometown many years ago. however, i would be interested to know if ANYONE has had a bad experience with that.
