Thanks for the input on my last entry. I bought Royal Canin Lite 37 and mixed it with the pretty pets, qbert seemed to eat both of them so I'm glad he likes the RCL. much, much better for him. And it's great that PetSmart sells $1.99 sample bags, before i spent the $13 for the big bag! i also got him a play pen so hopefully he will get used to me ( Read more... )

Fridge. To slow the development of the mealworms into beetles. They should last a few weeks.

also i do know a woman who raises her own mealies to feed to her birds. maybe she will give me a "starter kit" so i can do it myself, i'm sure it would be better so i can give them proper nutrition and therefore qbert would get it. but damn i'm so sqeamish, haha.

Don't raise them yourself. My brother tried that, and it was disturbing to the rest of us. He had hissing cockroaches in a cage in his room. And at least once one got out (I found it in my room). Ick ick ick.

I'm not a fan of mealworms either, but at least they can't go far.

The worms squirm less when they are pretty cold, so keep them in the fridge until you are ready to use them. I've found that if I hold them by the tail, they aren't able to bite. That's my best advice. Other than, you get used to it...

I get the freeze dried mealies, that way they don't squirm, don't bite, and don't crawl out of the cage if the hedgie doesn't eat it right away.
Oh, but they do smell a bit funny.
