While you can't talk, you can communicate via emotes. And after a while, you'll develop a sense of when someone's actually going to kill you vs. they happen to be in the same area. If they're running at you, they're probably going to kill you. If they're in the same area, clearly know you're there, but are giving you space then you're probably safe for the moment. There's times where a /wave or similar is enough to keep me from getting beaten to death.

But PvE isn't exactly griefer free, either. I remember Horde running through an area I was questing in on Argent Dawn and killing every single mob there. Or tagging a mob just before I opened fire, leaving me to try to kill the thing while they got the credit. Hell, I remember wars erupting between Tarren Mill and Southshore or attacks on the Rebel Camp in STV on the PvE server. It's not exactly happy fun time over there, and your options for retaliation are almost completely nonexistant in a lot of cases.
